Official source specification

U.S. online passport renewal guidance: JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC, or HEIF; 54 KB to 10 MB; color; taken within the last six months; and not digitally filtered or retouched. This browser checker validates JPEG/PNG files and cannot decode HEIC/HEIF files.

This is an automated mechanical pre-upload check (dimensions, format, byte limits). It cannot guarantee final acceptance or inspect identity.

JPEG and PNG files are inspected in your browser for format, size, and basic technical properties.

3

Review the visual checklist

Confirm lighting, background, position, eyes, glasses, and natural appearance yourself.

Open the linked Department of State guidance because the final review happens in the official application.

troubleshootTroubleshooting & Common Solutions

help_outlineThe file is below 54 KB or above 10 MB

Use the image compressor locally, but do not apply filters or retouching that change your appearance. Re-check the original source guidance before submitting.

help_outlineMy phone created an HEIC or HEIF file

The official online-renewal workflow lists HEIC and HEIF as accepted formats, but this browser checker does not decode them. Check the file directly in the official application or use a trusted device export that preserves the original appearance.

help_outlineThe photo has shadows, glare, or an uneven background

Take a new photo with even natural lighting and a plain white or off-white background. Do not digitally paint or replace the background.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this checker guarantee passport approval?

No. It checks supported technical properties and presents the official visual checklist. The passport application’s photo tool and a Department of State employee make the final determination.

Does the US online passport rule require 600×600 pixels and 240 KB?

Those are U.S. visa or other workflow values, not the current online passport-renewal rule shown on the linked Department of State page. Online renewal currently lists a 54 KB–10 MB range and supported file formats instead of that 240 KB ceiling.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. JPEG and PNG inspection happens in your browser. The checker does not send the image to a processing server.
